It's Sunday night and I'm beat! The show is open and, if the rumors are true, our first weekend was a success.
I apologize for not getting the video footage I mentioned in the last post, but it is hard to find time to film when the show is up and running -- plus, I'm a little preoccupied during that time as well. I do promise to try and get some cast/crew reaction to things next weekend.
As I said, the show was popular with audiences in attendance this weekend (let's hope that continues to be the case...!). That is not to say that there weren't hitches and glitches along the way... It is simply the nature of live performance that some things will not always go as planned. In a big musical like WEST SIDE STORY the probability is high that there will be a misstep or two! Thankfully, the audience rarely has any idea that something unusual is happening - that is, if the cast on-stage, the crew backstage and the orchestra in the pit are well-rehearsed and ready to make split-second decisions. Whether it's a missed entrance, a mechanical failure of some kind or a jumped cue, the show can still run smoothly if everyone is on top of their game. That's our job!
Now, I certainly won't give anything away, but there were some "interesting" moments this weekend... But, we shall chalk those up to the gremlins that hang around theatres and press on with the task at hand - which is to produce two more successful weekends! That's right, only two more weekends. So, get your tickets now if you haven't already. Call the Box Office at 317.923.4597 or visit www.civictheatre.org today!
One weekend down!

It was a great success! The "Jet" song could not have been more perfect. "Tony's" voice could not have been more perfect. The transition from "The Jet song" to the meeting with Tony on the ladder was smooth and sweet! The entire show was smooth and sweet! Please post some cast reaction. It would be nice to hear what their expectations were and what their expereince has been so far. Thanks for working so hard - my family had a wonderful time!
ReplyDeleteYour show was a great, great success! I am a native of Puerto Rico and have lived in Indiana for over 25 years. Growing up, I heard many real "Jet/Shark" stories from my older uncles who were living in New York in the 50's and 60's. This show is a reminder of their stuggle for acceptance and their fight against prejudice and stereotyping. More importantly, it teaches a great lesson. Your cast did a superb job of conveying that message. The cast also did a wonderful job of capturing the Latino Rythm with the upbeat songs and dance numbers. I was very tempted to get on stage and show them some of my own "Mambo" moves!! "Tony" was just remarkable - an unforgettable voice. Thank you so much for sharing all of your talent.

I'm thrilled to read such kind words on the blog and hear great things around town. This is a show I have always wanted to perform in and I am proud of the work that the whole cast and crew have done. I hope that the audiences that have seen it or will see it in the next two weekends enjoy themselves and tell their friends!! Thanks everyone!! --Jeremy Brimm (Chino)
ReplyDeleteThanks to you Jeremy - You did a wonderful job! You made the audience really jump when you shot Tony. Although we all knew it was going to happen, it felt so real and scary. All of the cast did an admirable job in bringing the story to life. Thanks!!

This show has been truely amazing to work on. Everyone from the cast, crew, orchestra, and directors have been great.
ReplyDelete-Bob Sorbera as a director is truely great to work with. He is all about teaching the development of a character and motivation behind everything that you do.
-Brent Marty has taken an extremely difficult score and turned it into a thing of beauty.
-Michael Worcel has always had encouragement and belief that we could execute this difficult choreography.
-Joanne Johnson has been a fantastic Stage Manager running a very smooth show onstage and backstage.
The cast has been a true joy to work with. This is one of the most interesting casts that I have worked with. We have become a very tight-knit and intertwined group. You have all been a great pleasure to me and I'm sure many others in the cast.
I hope everyone who is watching this show is enjoying it as much as I am on stage.
